Four seconds of silence across from someone — and already it itches inside. The air between bodies thickens, like something sticky spilled. Alone with yourself, the same pause would be invisible. You could go hours without a word — it just melts into the room, nothing stirs inside.
But here, four seconds. Not a pause anymore, but something alive under the skin.
Seems normal. But some part of me squirms: signal lost, connection fading. It’s not about sound at all. How many times on the way home I’ve turned off music and just listened to silence — there, calm is a comfort.
But if there’s a person across and both go quiet, it feels like the world cracks right between us. Like someone has to hold an invisible thread: “I’m here,” “I hear you.” Let go — and anxiety leaks in.
An ancient switch flips. The pack goes quiet — danger’s near; left without words — outside the circle.
That’s why talks often hit walls with “Well,” “So,” “I see…,” “Uh…” Nonsense phrases become a lifeline: the link’s still alive. Don’t let it snap, not even for a moment.
But sometimes it’s different. Sometimes you can sit side by side in silence, and it’s thrilling to the bone. Even silly to put words where silence speaks for both. It suddenly turns into a sign of trust, almost a thick fabric of closeness.
No panic about the channel breaking. On the contrary — silence holds you together stronger than any words.
There are moments when a pause is a shared breath. Therapy talks about this a lot: silence as space for real contact. If both get why they’re here and feel each other sharp enough — the pause turns into the room’s shared breathing. You feel the other’s presence almost physically.
Sometimes you want to hide inside that silence and stay there as long as you can.
Online, it all breaks faster. In chat you can be silent for a minute or ten — anxiety grows stronger than in person. No glance, no body move to fill the gaps between words. Just a dry “read” and emptiness after.
Funny thing: silence itself isn’t to blame. It’s all about the intent and the quality of the link between two people. When you trust the one across — you’re silent calmly or even happily; if not — four seconds buzz like mosquitoes under your skull.
The same piece of air can be a home or a trap.
And every time that moment before the first extra word after a pause surprises me again: who inside me can’t stand this emptiness so much?
