At some point, it’s just a tingle — like a quick zap across the skin on your thigh, just above the knee. Not painful, not annoying. The signal is clear: the phone vibrated. But it’s lying face down on the table, hasn’t gone anywhere. Still, your hand reaches for your pocket, fingers grabbing at empty air. You don’t even get to think about what you’re doing — the move comes first.
You turn on the screen — nothing. Empty.
At first, it’s funny: yeah, just your imagination, some nonsense. We’re used to jumping at every little sound. But then you notice — it happens more often than you want to admit. Twice this morning. Three times last night. Sometimes even without the phone in your pocket: left it at home, but the feeling’s still there — a phantom buzz where it can’t be.
The nervous system never stops — from day one with a smartphone, the brain learns to catch new signals as easily as it once learned to hear its own name in subway noise or pick out its key on a big keyring.
Slowly, an invisible layer forms around the body — the edge of sensation stretches outward and includes a piece of plastic and metal.
The pocket with the phone becomes a new organ. Its sensitivity is separate from the rest of the thigh.
It seems weird only until you remember old body tricks.
Drivers stop seeing the car as a foreign thing after a couple of weeks — they get a feel for the car’s length when parking, even if they’ve never seen it whole from the outside.
For blind people, the cane quickly turns into an extension of the hand — the brain maps the world through it almost like through its own fingers.
Even an umbrella in a crowd becomes a temporary limb: you feel the space around you differently than usual.
So does that mean the smartphone fits into the body map the same way? Turns out, the body map expands for any tool you use often and long enough. Phantom vibrations are just a side effect of this adjustment — the system of expectation builds up as naturally as breathing changes with running.
But here’s the subtle difference. All the old tools were under your control: you lead the cane; the car turns where you steer; the umbrella moves with your body and obeys every command (even if it sometimes gets caught on branches).
Here, part of the control shifted to the device — or rather, something between the device and a foreign system of goals.
The phone waits for signals from outside. Notifications come on schedules set by algorithms and corporate interests far beyond your control over the moment of contact. Part of your nervous system got synced with the rhythm of completely different control systems.
And the body stopped telling real vibration from phantom not because it got anxious or hooked — but because it accepted this signal source as part of itself.
That’s how the boundaries of “me” quietly shift. The place where the body used to end (skin, clothes) now spreads out to the edge of an outside object that reacts by its own rules and sometimes just stays silent — but the body still waits for its signal to act.
The most amazing thing is the calm with which this hybrid state is accepted. In the morning, before opening your eyes, your hand searches for the phone by touch; a forgotten device feels almost like losing a limb; all day you check an empty pocket as if waiting for a part of yourself to come home from a trip.
But with kids it’s different: their body maps form with the phone already inside the original set of the body’s possibilities — they don’t add the gadget after birth, they’re born with the gut feeling that an empty pocket is just not right.
But what if the next change happens without any device at all? If the signal pattern gets built right into the brain, skipping hardware and skin?
