A plant soaks up sunlight — pure order (low entropy) — turns it into heat and throws chaos back into the universe. Inside itself it builds structure only so the outside gets even messier. So: life isn’t a protest against the second law, but its dance partner.

Then things get strange on the next level. Schrödinger talked about “feeding on negative entropy” — negentropy; the phrase sounds almost like magic. Life doesn’t just build order from energy; it does it using information. DNA codes meaning in chemical letters, proteins assemble by the program — order becomes a way to be.

So life deals not only with energy to build the body’s structure but also with creating organized knowledge inside. Life turns out to be the best tool of the second law! The more complex the organism processes energy and information, the stronger it helps chaos grow around.

The stronger the island of order here (in a cell or brain), the more the ocean of disorder beyond it picks up waves. Thoughts create books and computers; computers heat rooms and burn megawatts for calculations; and all together they raise the sum of irreversibility on a cosmic scale.

The information processor (mind) and the physical chaos generator turn out to be two sides of the same machine.

Here the old fight — “life breaks the law” versus “life follows the law” — fades clear as water: we’re not exceptions to the rules or even their critics; we’re their logic made real at a new level of complexity.

And the question remains: if life’s complexity just speeds the universe’s move to balance (when nothing can tell itself from the rest) — does being an island of order mean being the front line of the coming chaos?
