I always thought the brain was just that—me, a bunch of wires and switches, a circuit set once and for all. Even when you forget your second-grade teacher’s name or can’t learn to park backwards, somewhere inside there’s this feeling: that’s the limit. Biology said “stop” — so it won’t grow anymore.
But it wasn’t just a gut feeling or laziness. It was official knowledge, written in textbooks, said from a podium by a man named Santiago Ramón y Cajal. Not just anyone — the very Cajal whose portrait hangs in institutes like a science icon. He once said with certainty: nerve paths are fixed and unchanging. Everything can die, nothing can regrow. Period. The door slammed shut.
I think about what it must have been like — to build your life under that sentence. Every failure or skill you couldn’t reach turned into fate: that’s how it is, nothing you can do. You could only accept it or pretend to be a tough ironist.
Then it turned out: the door wasn’t a door, but a thin curtain. You just had to pull it aside a bit — and behind it was another reality. New neurons are born in the hippocampus of adults. The brain grows and shrinks right now — without Cajal’s permission.
At first it seemed: well, maybe some cells were born somewhere. Maybe it’s just a statistical fluke? But it turned out way stranger and more physical.
London cab drivers spend years mapping the city’s maze — and their rear hippocampus gets thicker, literally thicker to the touch (if you could touch it). Not a metaphor: brain matter changes in response to a daily life task. Or another example: someone had a stroke, part of their brain died forever — and suddenly a nearby area slowly starts taking over lost functions after months of stubborn training.
Nothing mystical: hundreds of thousands of new connections form where yesterday there was a blank page.
There are less dramatic cases — meditation changes the thickness of the cortex; learning a new language at 60 leads to growth of gray matter right where it’s needed for speech and memory. The adult brain acts more like warmed-up clay: you touch it a little — the mark stays.
At that moment your sense of self suddenly flips inside out. If neuroplasticity works all life long — there’s no biological sentence at all.
The usual excuse “I’m just like this” disappears. Turns out, I’m not some fixed thing with set borders; I’m a process of constantly rearranging bricks while building my own house. Any fear or habit today is the result of the path of changes that led here — sometimes by chance, sometimes because “there was no other way.”
Freedom feels almost physical: if there’s no ceiling on what’s possible — there’s no automatic fate for what comes next.
But then another feeling comes: responsibility becomes full and irreversible. If I can always change — any current “me” is the result of my own actions (or inaction) plus the world around me.
That sounds almost heroic… until the thought stumbles on the dark side of plasticity.
The brain doesn’t change only for the better. Chronic stress shrinks the hippocampus; addiction builds reward loops you can’t break with willpower alone; trauma rewires fear centers so deep that even years later the body reacts faster than the mind.
Plasticity turns out to be a two-way street: any crack can become a highway for new chances or a dead end of locked-in pain. The freedom paradox: the chance to be anyone comes with the risk of becoming someone you never wanted to be… just because you got caught in the grip of your surroundings or your past.
The more you think about it, the wider the fallout beyond your own story.
