Time feels weird—sometimes it drags, sometimes it flies. But maybe that’s not just in my head. Maybe “now” isn’t a thing out there at all.

Yesterday I checked the time—just wanted to see how much was left in a meeting. Five minutes on the screen felt like chewing gum stretched too thin. Then suddenly—I look again, and an hour’s gone.

Everything that just was—faces, phrases, slides—flashed by and vanished. It felt like someone was stealing chunks of time—sometimes stretching them out, sometimes crumpling them into a ball.

At first, I thought it was just a glitch in attention or memory. If you’re bored, time drags forever. If you’re hooked, you blink and it’s already evening. But the longer I watch this torn-up inner time, the more I feel there’s something deeper.

Every feeling has its own timer. Visual time ticks at one speed—but each impression slices it into pieces of different thickness. Audio time can dance differently: the same song sometimes lasts forever, sometimes flies by unnoticed.

There’s no single time center in the brain. No conductor waving a baton for the whole orchestra at once. Each zone counts its own stretch: basal ganglia catch the body’s rhythm; the cortex tracks the visual flow; the auditory part gathers the soundscape; the limbic system starts its clocks during fear or thrill.

These clocks can run out of sync—then you get chronostasis (the first moment after shifting your gaze feels stretched), the oddball effect (a strange stimulus drags longer than usual), the kappa illusion (distance between events changes how long intervals feel).

Sometimes holes or folds suddenly open up right inside the fabric of perception.

So “now” isn’t a basic point of being. It’s the result of a tricky sync of inner rhythms. A moment pops up only when the brain glues together mismatched signals from different senses and tries to line them up on a shared time counter. And this syncing isn’t always perfect. Like an editor feverishly splicing film from different cameras—sometimes the seams show.

But physics tells a totally different story. Its equations don’t leave room for “now.” t is just a coordinate next to x, y, and z. Past and future are equal for the formulas—there’s no special present point, no arrow of time forcing the world forward.

If past and future aren’t set by the universe itself (only by my mind), then I live inside my own time model—I’m mapping a route on the space-time map and drawing a line through the point “I am here.” Maybe the whole road already exists? A firefly crawls on a glass jar and thinks the path is long and straight—but the whole jar is there all at once.

Time’s flow turns out not to be a feature of the world “out there,” but a way the brain organizes the chaos of sensory data into something that makes sense. The brain forces order where physics leaves room for many meanings.

My past is built with every new look back; the future exists as a probable guess; the present breaks down into clusters of neural events of different lengths and thicknesses.

If I don’t live in time,
but inside my own time sense,

then what’s left of my “now” at all?
